Phuut phassa Thai dai mai?

Post by Admin on Sat Jun 20, 2009 4:49 pm

Myself included here - there are a lot of foreigners here who have been here for quite a few years who can't really hold a proper conversation in the Thai language. Yes, we can order beer and food and you know how to say LM Daeng at 7/11 but how much of a real conversation could you hold? There is only a handful, I'd even say only a small handful of foreigners here who can.

But, if we were in our own countries and there were a lot of 'immigrants' who couldn't speak our mother tongue, I'm sure there would be a lot complaining.
Whatvare your views?

I don't care if they can speak proper languages or not... as long as they try I am happy with that.

I do wish I could speak better Thai, but hey, I can call Pizza company and order from them. i can pretty much do what I need to do in here and get by with my pigeon Thai...

I'm a great believer in body language. If some guy from whatever country can't communicate verbally, he will be able to communicate using gestures. Look at westerners here!

Languages are the key to understanding. Understanding is the key to tolerance and i think tolerance is something this world is in short supply of.
Learning Thai is easily the most beneficial thing i have ever done in this country. My daily life is not only easier and less stressful it is actually richer and more enjoyable. Please give it a go, it's not that hard.

There's a South African guy here (guitar player) who has learnt really decent conversational Thai in 5 months. I taught a Canadian guy to have meaningful conversations in 4 months. Remember, the best way to teach is to be a learner.

Good Luck !

Have a look at some of the lessons SipatrJay has put up on here. Print them out, stick them on the inside of your toilet door and, hey presto! you can teach yourself while you have 'nothing' else to do.

How much will you pay??? Money will help on the will power...

I cant speak decent conversational Thai if my life depended on it... Tell us how it is going!

I agree with Admin in the fact we complain when people who live in our counties don't speak our language....I used to be one of those UNTIL I lived in NST, now my opinion on that has changed......I also agree with Snowflake that if they simply make an effort to speak my language I appreciate that and don't get caught up in the fact I cant hold a conversation with them.......universal body language gets most requests and points across!!
