Extra lights on a Fino

Post by Its Raining on Fri Oct 21, 2011 4:56 pm

I got some funky LED strips the other week from the Thalad Park festival and hooked them up to the wifes Fino.
1 is attached around the rear grab bar and wired to the break light, the other runs down the front mudguard and is wired to the ignition switch (the same connection that powers the light for the speedo).

My reasoning for these connections is that the headlight and tail lights both appear to run direct from the magneto, which fails to produce enough uumph to power these LED strips.
The break light and speedo light are powered straight from the battery, which does have the required uumph.

Both lights work great when you turn on the ignition and press the break, and they both worked fine for a week or so while the bike was running. The other day, they both suddenly stopped working properly while the bike was running, yet work fine again when the engine is off and just the ignition switch on.

As these are just LED strips, they should not be taking much power, so my questions:

1. Is this a sign my magneto coils are on their way out?
2. Does the power for the break light and speedo light magically jump from battery to magneto when the engine starts?
3. Is there a better way to connect them up? (I want the rear strip to come on with the break light)

In thinking, maybe the answer to 3 would be physically connect them to the battery and use relays, but that seems a bit overkill for 2 poxy LED strip.

I've seen the amount of flashing lights they attach to moped over here so figure there must be a standard method of connecting them up.

BTW........ I'm pretty sure the bike goes faster with these lights on.

update on this:
I would add that these strips are on a printed circuit and the LED's flash in sequence (so are not all on at the same time).
Of the 1st 2 we bought, 1 did not work at all so we got it changed (I think that should have given me a big clue).
Today, we turned on the ignition and the strip on the front of the bike was completely dead. I stripped out the wiring again and everything was still ok. I run a direct lead from the battery to the lights and nothing came on.................. it was ker nackered.

Guess I should have known really, they were cheap and on a market............... bound to be NFG really.

Just waiting for the strip on the back to give up now.

Have you ever tried telling a Thai that cheap usually means cr4p?

Cheap means it wont cost you too much to buy another one when it breaks......... great logic!

They did look nice for the short time they were working. I've kept the wiring in place as I might hook up a mini xmas tree to it next month

not wanting to go off topic, but just noticed the "Similar topics" bit at the bottom of this thread:

got an idea... remember dynamo's ? old bicycles used to have them..
why dont you make a dynamo and connect your lights to it.. all it will require then is the wheels to move.. no more problems..
